Judy & Pung

Judy Hauser, nicknamed Punzel by her German born husband Bernd, was an author, illustrator, and designer. She began sharing her Swedish heritage 40 years ago when she built a cottage, reminiscent of the culture, surrounded by 90 acres of idyllic hardwoods, named the Tidendal Woods. Judy spent the summers of her early life in a log cabin built by her Swedish grandparents on Walloon Lake. Those happy child memories inspired to her to write her first book, The Legend of Punzel’s Pond, that reflects her love of folklore and its connection to nature. The book and other short stories written and illustrated for Michigan Magazine, all come to life through woodcarvings, made by son Kurt, which can be seen throughout the property. Judy handcrafted many of the traditional items found in the shop. Her talents continued into the culinary word through once served gourmet lunches and “Fikas”, using traditional Nordic foods and edible flowers. Judy dedicated the business to her grandparents and the legacy continues as granddaughter Karli, became the new proprietress in 2024. Karli graduated from Kendall College of Art and Design with a BFA in illustration, following in her farmor’s path of creative endeavors.
